Ask whether a new book is wanted

A logbook is part of the pilot’s record-keeping routine. Some people use paper, some use digital tools and some use both. A new book may be welcome at the start of training but unnecessary later. Ask the recipient or instructor what format is preferred. Do not assume that an attractive cover is enough to make the book suitable.

Check the layout rather than just the cover

Look at the interior page format, dimensions and binding information on the product listing. The ASA book in this guide is a low-cost candidate at a listed $9.49, not a recommendation for every jurisdiction or training program. Let the pilot and instructor decide what meets their record-keeping needs. Our gift guide does not establish aviation documentation requirements.

Keep personalization reversible

Write your message in a separate card rather than inside the logbook unless the recipient has said they want that. Do not fill in flight information or create an entry as a surprise. An engraved cover or permanent inscription can make an otherwise simple exchange impossible. If you want to recognize a milestone, include the date in the card and let the pilot choose how to preserve it.

A small companion gift can be enough

A pen can accompany the book if it suits the recipient’s preferences. Keep the bundle modest and include a gift receipt. If the pilot already has a well-established system, choose a keepsake or a contribution toward something on their wishlist instead. The purpose is to support their flying journey, not to redesign how they document it.
