Pilot Gift Guide is produced by the team behind ATC, which is featured first and pictured in the artwork. These are researched recommendations, not independent hands-on test results.

There is a particular kind of person who pauses a conversation when an airplane flies overhead. They notice the airline, wonder where it is heading, and would happily spend an afternoon watching arrivals. If that sounds like someone in your family, an aviation app can be a thoughtful gift: something they can enjoy long after the wrapping paper is gone.

The trick is to choose for the way they enjoy flying. A weekend pilot planning a cross-country trip wants something different from a plane spotter, a frequent business traveler, or a retired captain who still loves the sound of a busy airport. We would start with that distinction, then check the phone they use and the subscriptions they already have.

Below are four different directions to consider, with the actual gifting route spelled out for each. ForeFlight and Flighty have dedicated gift options. For ATC, confirm the current membership or physical gift-card offer; for Flightradar24, a contribution toward the recipient’s own subscription is the more practical route. You do not need to buy every app—or the most expensive tier—to make this feel personal.

The picks

Chosen for the recipient and use described, using published product information. We have not hands-on tested these products.

  1. ATC — Live Air Traffic Radio
    1. Airport-radio listeners and plane spotters

ATC — Live Air Traffic Radio

Our app: Pilot Gift Guide is produced by the team behind ATC. This is a recommendation of our own product.

For the person who would happily listen to the tower long after the airport visit is over.

Some aviation gifts are about utility; this one is about staying close to the activity of an airport. ATC pairs airport audio with maps, transcripts and replay features. For someone curious about the conversations behind each arrival and departure, that is a different experience from watching an aircraft icon move across a screen.

We would choose it for an enthusiastic listener, a plane spotter, or a pilot who enjoys aviation away from work. Start by checking the airports they care about. A familiar training airport or a favorite destination can give the gift a personal connection. This is an interest-led recommendation, not a substitute for flight instruction or operational information.

    How to give it

The artwork shows an ATC annual membership card. Check ATC’s current gift-card availability, delivery and redemption terms before ordering; we have not verified a public gift-card checkout. An App Store subscription on your own account should not be treated as a transferable gift.

    Keep in mind
Coverage varies by airport; a subscription is not automatically transferable as a gift.

  2. ForeFlight Mobile
    2. The pilot who already plans flights on an iPad

    ForeFlight Mobile

A practical choice when the pilot has already told you this is the app they use.

It is hard to surprise a pilot with better flying tools than the ones they have carefully chosen. Paying toward a tool they already rely on is a different proposition. ForeFlight brings planning, charts, weather and logging into an electronic flight bag, so this is the most practical direction here for an existing user.

For a student pilot, ask what their instructor or school recommends before choosing a plan. For an experienced pilot, an exact renewal contribution is often a better fit than an unsolicited upgrade. Treat the pilot’s preferences as the shopping list: their region, flying and equipment matter more than which tier sounds impressive.

    How to give it

ForeFlight offers certificates in plan-sized amounts or $25 increments. The certificate is emailed to the buyer to print or forward. The recipient redeems it toward a subscription; ForeFlight says a credit card is required even when the certificate covers the full amount.

    Keep in mind
The right plan depends on the pilot’s flying and region. Do not choose a new cockpit app without asking them.

  3. Flighty Pro
    3. The frequent flyer and airport-connection planner

    Flighty Pro

For the family member who treats every connection like a small logistical project.

There is an important difference between loving airplanes and loving the logistics of getting somewhere. Flighty is the pick for the second part: the person checking the incoming aircraft, the connection, and what a delay means for the rest of the day. Pro adds travel-focused tools such as delay alerts and connection assistance.

That can make it relevant to a pilot who travels as a passenger, or to their partner who organizes family trips. If your recipient rarely flies commercially, start with the free app before paying for a year. A subscription should match a habit they already have, not one you hope they will develop.

    How to give it

Flighty lists its personal annual gift at $59, delivered by email, with redemption required within 30 days. Check availability and the exact plan before checkout. Family and lifetime products have separate prices and terms; do not assume this annual offer covers them.

    Keep in mind
An Apple-device gift, not an Android subscription. The annual gift listing says to redeem within 30 days; verify the selected product’s terms before buying ahead.
    Before you choose
Check their Apple device and OS against the current App Store listing, and whether they already have Pro.

  4. Flightradar24
    4. The plane spotter who always asks “Where is that going?”

    Flightradar24

For the person who cannot hear an airplane overhead without wanting to identify it.

A plane-spotting app turns an ordinary moment into a small investigation: which aircraft is that, where did it come from, and where is it going? Flightradar24 is the direction we would explore for someone who enjoys those questions. Its free version is a sensible place to start before deciding whether a paid tier adds enough.

For a recipient who already uses it, ask which feature they wish they had. Longer flight history may be useful to one person; another may be perfectly happy with the free map. The gift works best as a thoughtful contribution to their hobby, rather than a subscription chosen because it has the longest feature list.

    How to give it

We did not verify a dedicated gift-certificate option. Offer to cover their chosen plan and let them purchase through their own account. Confirm the billing period, renewal settings and current price together; do not create a second account just to preserve the surprise.

    Keep in mind
We did not verify a dedicated gift-certificate checkout. Arrange a contribution toward their own subscription instead of buying it on your account. Coverage varies.

Choose for their kind of flying

For the person who follows airport activity for fun, start with ATC or Flightradar24. For a pilot who spends evenings planning real flights, ask which ForeFlight plan they use. For someone who spends more time making connections than flying the airplane, Flighty is the more relevant direction. A pilot can enjoy all of those things, but their everyday habits tell you which gift is likely to get opened again next week.

Four questions to ask before you buy

Ask what phone or tablet they use, which aviation apps they already pay for, whether a school or employer covers any subscriptions, and when their current plan renews. You can keep it casual: “What is that app you always open at the airport?” is often enough to learn the most important detail. If the answer is a specific product and plan, use that as your starting point. A duplicate subscription is much less useful than a contribution toward the one they have chosen.

Make a digital gift feel like a real present

A small note can do the work that packaging usually does. Write why you chose the app: for the airport they learned at, the trips you take together, or the airplanes they always point out. Put a printed certificate or redemption instructions in an envelope, or pair the gift with an afternoon at a public airport viewing area. If you choose a physical membership card, confirm delivery dates and how it is redeemed before promising it for a particular occasion. Keep redemption codes out of shared photographs.

Buying early for Christmas? Check the redemption window

A digital gift can be a useful last-minute option, but buying it very early is not always better. Flighty’s personal annual gift listing currently says to redeem within 30 days. Other products and plans may have different conditions. Read the terms for the exact gift you are purchasing, decide when it will be delivered, and tell the recipient if they need to activate it promptly. Do not assume that an emailed code can sit unopened until the holiday.

What if they already have the app?

Let the recipient guide the next step. A contribution toward renewal may be welcome; a second account usually is not. Before buying credit, confirm that it can be applied to their existing account, billing route and subscription tier. If they already have lifetime access, choose another experience or a physical gift instead. An offer to cover their next renewal can be more thoughtful than changing a setup they already like.

How we chose these apps

We selected four distinct uses: airport listening, flight planning, airline-trip tracking and plane spotting. We reviewed official product pages, App Store information and published gift instructions, and separated confirmed gift options from subscriptions that need to be arranged with the recipient. We have not run a comparative hands-on test. ATC is our own app, and that relationship is disclosed here and beside its recommendation. Prices, device requirements and redemption terms can change; follow the source links before committing to a gift.
